Companion Care

Companionship and Support for Independent Living

Companion care is a valuable service that provides emotional support and companionship to seniors who wish to maintain their independence at home.

This type of care is especially beneficial for older adults experiencing feelings of loneliness, apathy, or lack of motivation, or who are at risk of depression. It aims to enhance their overall quality of life.

Our caregivers offering companionship care spend quality time with patients, engaging in conversations and shared activities.

These activities can vary based on the patient’s interests and may include hobbies like drawing, painting, sewing, gardening, playing cards, or board games. Taking leisurely walks, organizing family photos, tidying up closets, and more. The goal is to keep them engaged, content, and doing things they enjoy.

Companion care may appear less involved than personal care, but it requires a specific kind of personality. At Royalty Homecare, our Companion Caregivers are positive, cheerful, engaging, and proactive.

Typically, companion care is combined with certain personal care needs. For example, caregivers can assist with preparing breakfast, accompany the patient to senior centers for exercises and socialization, remind them about medications, make the bed, shop for groceries, prepare meals, watch movies together, or solve puzzles.

Throughout the day, they blend companionship with instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).

WHEN COMPANION CARE IS VITAL

Companion care plays a crucial role as adults age and faces challenges with balance. Having someone available to change light bulbs or provide assistance when navigating stairs becomes essential.

As we grow older, our balance tends to decline, and what may seem like a simple task can quickly become an emergency room visit. Companion caregivers ensure the safety of your loved ones while keeping them happy, engaged, and independent, thereby minimizing the risk of accidents.

In this way, companion care serves as a preventative measure, preserving older adults’ safety and independence.

Additionally, some individuals seek companionship for themselves or their loved ones following the loss of a spouse. We’ve had clients who found solace in the companionship of a caregiver during the mourning process.

One of our clients, Anne, shared her experience: “I wouldn’t have been able to cope after my husband passed away without my caregiver’s assistance. She truly helped me navigate the process of handling my husband’s belongings.” The caregiver supported Anne in sorting through her husband’s things, organizing closets, separating clothing items, sorting documents, and storing belongings.
